Hello all! Sorry I'm late. I will get to your questions from last week tonight or tomorrow. Todays post is pretty straightforward and simple - but its at the crux of taking action. The 80/20 rule talks about focusing on the things that make 80 percent of the difference with 20 percent of the work. When you are first starting, that is almost always contacting people. 1. Watch this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkTf0LmDqKI 2. If you have questions - get them posted before thursday. 3. Identify 1 person to contact to achieve something that you want to achieve. You should be uncomfortable contacting this person. Post who it is and what your plan is to contact them. What are you asking them? Why are you contacting them? I will be reviewing all of this and will take calls if you want to roleplay or run anything by me before the actual contact. 4. Contact them. 5. Tell us what happened by next week post. Have fun and let me know if you have any questions. JH

So... What am I wanting to accomplish? Learning copy. What do I need to accomplish that? Resources + critique. I have those through you Jonathan. Thanks! My issue: Who do I contact and for what? Suggestions? Ideas?

This concept is amazing! And valuable!
So at 12.... 12 years old, Steve just got out a phone book and called the head of HP?? Last week I handed the phone to the boys to call a business to ask if the product they wanted was on the shelf... Normally, I would have called.... I have got to get out of the way!!!!
However, I am attempting to flesh this out in my head, and I'm not sure everyone is at the point of being ready to ask for help, or at least to ask for help from an expert in the field.
David needs some help figuring out how Java Script is used in the real world. Does anyone know someone who works with Java Script for pay? He also is getting stuck from time to time, it would be helpful to have someone to call when he can't figure out what the problem is. BUT, putting in the elbow grease to figure out the problem himself is pretty valuable!
Stephen has contacted Phil for help. I'm not sure how uncomfortable that was for him, but he did talk to Phil about his music goals and Phil helped him create a plan of action. Now Stephen is at the place where he needs to follow through and take action. As he is taking action, more will unfold. But I think it might be premature for him to contact someone else just now.
I was going to post this on the big hairy goal thread, but it fits here. It seems we are at a bit of an impasse in identifying a big hairy goal. However, my perception is that each of us has begun carving out some goals for the next season. I've been wondering if the thought of a "big hairy goal" is a little too far out there, and if we need to build a little more of a bridge to get there. My suggestion would be for everyone to flesh out the road map they have created since we began. (This could go on the monthly overview). Lets celebrate and validate those, tweak them if needed, then just see if a larger 'big hairy" picture emerges. And also, that may help us see more opportunities to reach out for help. Perhaps the goal or destination for each of us isn't clear enough for us to see who or what type of experts can help. Make sense?

^ that sounds like a good idea to me. I'd like to contact someone, but I'm feeling like it might be a little premature for me just yet as well. And that maybe I should work more with Jonathan and copy before I even have questions to ask or know how to look for help.

The assignment didn't have to be someone that was business related or related to your big goal. It was:
-----
There has to be plenty of people each one of you would be uncomfortable reaching out to for something.
Brainstorm ideas:
Hobbies. Things you enjoy. Skills. People you respect. People you admire. Technical skills.
I.E. David could call a professor at a local college and ask for some good java script resources and tips.
This is an important assignment and will hit your limiting beliefs hardcore.

Don't believe you can "only call someone once" - so you have to save this assignment for the perfect thing. Don't make it a huge deal. Just take action and get out of your comfort zone a bit. Again - this is one of the most important assignments. Call me if you get stuck. Feel free to post your plan for feedback before executing... Or just post after the call. Have fun! First phone call gets a prize from me. Every person who makes a call gets entered into another random prize as well.

So what I was going to call about is what the foundations of a man are. The base character traits that every man of God has. My plan was to call a couple of people and find the traits that have been of the most value to them and how they learned to enact them. I think a Good person to call first is Des Harmes. I do not know him very well and it would be out of my comfort zone. can I do this for this assignment?

So my person was Margret Jonte the lady who leads our home group. I had been thinking about calling her for a few months to get together one on one but was pretty nervous I guess. Always had excuses not too. I finally called her! And she was super excited to meet with me & we already met 1 time & are probably going to meet again soon.
- Stephen my thought is that Dez Harms qualifies if it is stretching for you. If you feel comfortable calling him it probably doesn't hit the mark, but if the idea of calling him is kind of scary or makes you nervous I think it qualifies

Okay, so I'm definitely behind on this. Not having internet has made it a little difficult. But, that's making excuses. I really don't know who to contact. I was thinking and thought it would be really cool to contact Misty Edwards or Laura Hackett or a worship leader from IHOP because I feel "called" to be a worship leader in some form or another. But, of course, I have no idea how to get ahold of those people. So, I need suggestions/ideas. Everyone that I've thought of, I have no way to get their information to contact them. Thanks for your help! -Lydia

I am going to contact Des Harmes tonight(Monday)these are the questions i am going to ask him
1-In your opinion what are the 5 most important character traits of a man of God?
2-Why are they important to you?
3-What have been some of the challenges you have met enacting these traits?
4-What was most helpful to you in overcoming these challenges?
5-What was/is the highest cost you have paid to be able to enact these?
6-What has been the biggest payoff so far from enacted these traits?
7-Is there any reading content that you would suggest on any or all of the 5 traits?
Wish me luck.

Made the call and it went well.
in the opinion of Des the most valuable traits are -tenacity,persistence. to be able to continue on the path of God whatever that may look like. -Wisdom. to be able to tell truth from error. -compassion, empathy. this is highly important for a man, to be able to be empathetic and compassionate towards others. -honesty. to be honest with yourself, to constantly examine yourself. and to always to the truth to others regardless of the cost. - patience. much like persistence to continue to walk the path of God. even when it feels like it is a long and lonely road.
for des the biggest challenge was lack of patience, with others God and the world. and what helped the most was the Bible, rereading it over and over, and honesty with self.
as far as cost there is not a way to measure the cost of what you have to pay to be a man of God.
and for the payoff, being able to avoid error and the cost.
he also suggested Watchmen Nee, Derek prince, and Joseph prince, as people to study.

Okay, after trying four different people who didn't get back to me, I finally found someone that qualifies that I contacted and got a response. She's a leader at Canvas that I don't know very well. She kind of intimidates me, so I was nervous asking her out to coffee. But I did and now we're planning a time. I'm going to ask her questions about how to relate to people in a ministry setting and how to be both genuine and encouraging. She's really introverted but does a great job at it, so I really think she'll have a lot of good stuff to say. Which I need right now. Being a leader at a young adults group is significantly more challenging than I anticipated. So that's it for me. I'm ready for week seven! -Lydia

I don't want to get left out of the random prize from Jonathan!!! Phil had a contact he wanted me to talk to. He sent me her number, I called (we played a little phone tag) when I finally reached her, she ordered some product and we plan to meet a Phil's in a couple weeks so she can evaluate the business. BOOM!
And yes, this DID count, even though Phil did the heavy lifting, I was nervous. And talking about products, recommending products for her specific goals, etc.... was out of my comfort zone, but not our of my knowledge. (at least not at this point.)
just FYI, I'd a lot rather e-mail. Phone is more intimidating.... just sayin'
